Public Health in Berkshire

Public Health is delivered via a networked hub and spoke model, with a shared Strategic Director of Public Health.

A shared team, known as Public Health for Berkshire, supports local, Consultant led teams in each authority. We are key partners in two established integrated care systems, Frimley Health & Care and BOB (Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West) and link into two CCGs.

The shared team provides strategic leadership, health protection support, commissioning and contracting services and health intelligence which compliments the work of the specialists and practitioners in the unitary authorities.

The shared arrangements for public health across the county are governed via a Memorandum of Understanding between each local team and the shared team. The six Consultant in Public Health leads come together monthly to plan and collaborate, each taking thematic leads across a multi borough footprints e.g. on suicide prevention or healthy living.

There are regular away days and opportunities for training and development. Berkshire is a popular training location both for Foundation Doctors and Public Health Specialists. The Consultants are all associate members of the Association of Directors of Public Health, benefitting from the range of networking and skills development opportunities on offer. We are entering into sector led improvement work in partnership with the Portsmouth and Southampton Public Health Team.

Increasingly we are brokering work across departments within our councils and between authorities to meet the needs of populations in common and to realise economies of scale.

The arrangements and staffing of each local team vary, with some authorities maintaining a sizeable public health team and others working in a more networked manner with public health delivery spread across the council.
